Minesweeper Flags uses the familiar number clues but changes the value of every click. A mine scores a point and keeps your turn. A numbered square gives the turn away. Good play therefore combines logical deduction with tempo and information control.
1. Start with the two essential deductions
Every number counts the mines in its eight neighbouring squares, including diagonals. Captured mines count towards that total. Before clicking, test the position against two rules.
The second rule creates the biggest difference from classic Minesweeper. A safe square is useful knowledge, but it is not automatically a useful move. Keep track of cleared areas and search elsewhere for a forced mine first.
Compare overlapping clues
Do not read each number on its own. When two clues share covered squares, compare what each one still needs. If a 1 and a 2 share the same two unknown squares but the 2 has one extra unknown neighbour, that extra square explains the difference and must contain a mine. This subset reasoning unlocks positions that no single clue can resolve.

2. Treat the turn as a resource
Finding a mine both scores and lets you play again. A sequence of certain mines is therefore worth more than the same points spread across separate turns. Before taking an obvious mine, spend a few seconds locating the next one. After a successful click, the 30-second clock restarts for the new move.
3. Build chains without feeding your opponent
A chain is any series of mines you can justify one after another. They do not need to be adjacent. What matters is knowing your follow-up before finishing the current move.
- Scan edges and corners: fewer neighbours often make their clues easier to resolve.
- Keep a spare capture: when two certain mines are available, one can act as a bridge while you analyse another area.
- Re-read after every flag: a new capture may turn several unknown squares into known safe squares.
- Consider the shared information: a failed guess can reveal the exact clue your opponent needs for a long chain.
4. Choose useful risks when logic runs out
Some positions require a guess. Compare both the chance of a mine and the information created by a miss. A square beside several constrained clues is easier to estimate, but it may also expose a valuable frontier to your opponent.
When leading, reduce variance and prefer the best-supported probability. When behind, opening a dense area may be worth the risk because it creates more comeback opportunities. Never rush the final seconds: choose a simple, defensible square before the timer forces a random click.
Common decision errors
- Treating a certainly safe square as a good competitive move.
- Reading the nearest clue but missing a diagonal clue.
- Always choosing the centre even when an edge has clearer information.
- Taking one obvious mine without preparing the next move.
5. Time the 5×5 bomb
The bomb can be used once per game and only while you are behind. It reveals a 5×5 area and awards every mine inside it. Launching it as soon as it becomes available often wastes its potential.
Aim at a mostly covered interior area. A centre close to the edge places part of the 5×5 footprint outside the board, while a partially solved area contains fewer unknown mines. Do not interrupt a guaranteed normal chain just to use the bomb. It is strongest when the score demands a swing and no forced sequence is available.
6. Play the score in the endgame
There are 51 mines, so 26 guarantees the majority. Near the end, count what each player needs rather than trying to solve the entire board. If you are one point away, any forced mine is the correct priority. If your opponent is one point away, avoid opening a clue that leaves an immediate capture.
A six-step check before clicking
- Find clues that already have all their flags.
- Find clues whose remaining unknowns must all be mines.
- Compare overlapping clue groups.
- Prepare the move after your next capture.
- Check how many points each player needs to reach 26.
- If guessing is unavoidable, minimise the useful information you give away.
